There are plenty of challenges when implementing outdoor digital signage but despite this more and more digital displays are being erected outside to take advantage of the higher audience numbers these outdoor digital advertising displays can generate.

While the most obvious challenge for taking a commercial grade LCD display outside is protecting it from the weather, and in particular rainfall, the problems associated with the sun can be just as difficult to overcome.

The problem with the sun and outdoor digital signage is that direct sunlight will often make the screen unreadable. Not only can sun cause glare (you must know what that is like when you try and watch the TV at home during the summer months where quite often you are forced to close the curtain to see the screen clearly) but even if there is no glare in bright sunlight the screen will appear dim and difficult to read.

But there are methods to ensure the screen is as readable as possible when taken outdoors:

Brightness

Ensuring you have the brightest type of screen possible will go along way to ensuring the screen is readable. The brightness of LCD screens is measured in nits (aka candela per square metre).

The minimum screen brightness for any outdoor LCD display should be 800 nits but LCD with 1000+ nits are available and should be considered when looking to get into outdoor digital signage. It should also be noted that in general commercial displays have higher nit values and are better suited for outdoor signage screens.

Anti-glare technologies

Preventing glare is done in a number of ways. Optical bondng, anti-reflective glass and tinting are just some options. Sadly, no matter which way you go on this there most likely will be some drop-off in brightness.

Direct sunlight can cause more problems than just glare too. Screen burn can develop if the sun is constantly on it so either the outdoor digital screen should be turned away from the sun or some other solution to prevent this screen burn should be considered such as cooling the screen itself.

Bespoke Outdoor Content

A lot of content that works well in indoor locations doesn’t respond well to be taken outdoors. Use colours and designs that are more prominent in outdoor locations. There is often a lot of trial and error involved in this but check what works and what doesn’t and you should soon develop a flare for designing content that is suitable for outdoor digital signage.

Are you suffering from stress related acne? Has anyone told you that stress does not cause acne? Don’t listen to them. Stress elevates hormones in the body that act like androgens, causing the sebaceous glands to produce more oil than is needed. This oil combines with dead skin cells and clogs the pores. Once the pore s clogged, the bacteria, p. acnes, begin to colonize and form the classical zit. A whitehead full of pus, which needs to be dealt with appropriately to avoid lifelong physical and emotional scars. Where you live, work and vacation all have an effect on your stress levels. In turn the stress levels do effect your skin. We will cover items that can act as triggers to acne flare-ups and what you can do to avoid them.

Comedones (blackheads) on the job

Because some part of your skin is always in contact with your surroundings, it’s important to pay attention to the things you come in contact with regularly. You may be exposed to comedogenic (pore-clogging) substances on the job without even knowing it; although these substances are not the cause of your pimples , they do exacerbate it. For example: the airborne grease in a fast-food restaurant can create an invisible film on your skin, clogging your pores. Most industrial oils: the kinds used in cars, factories and bicycles are comedogenic as well.

Acne and Sleep

One of the simplest ways you can do your skin well may surprise you: sleep! Researchers and mothers around the globe agree that a good night’s sleep of at least eight hours can do wonders for your complexion. How? It is true that a strong and healthy body has the likelihood to have a stronger immune system. A healthy immune system will not prevent acne entirely but it will help fight the infection, which helps your lesions heal faster and more thoroughly. Fortunately, your body isn’t picky; uninterrupted sleep during the daytime is just as beneficial. So if you work late, then you should sleep late and try to stay on a regular schedule.

Sun and Acne

While it’s true that small amounts of sun exposure may appear to improve acne, don’t be fooled; the benefit is temporary and is really just hiding the inconsistencies in the color of the skin. Consistent sun exposure will cause your skin to become dry, causing your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. It is also true that skin that is consistently exposed to the sun has to slough off more old cells and more frequently; when you combine the extra oil and extra dead cells, you create a conditions that are ideal for comedones (black heads), or blocked pores to form. So if you are going to spend a lot of time in the sun you will want to shield your skin with sunscreen. Find oil-free sunscreens that provide a SPF 15 protection level from UVA and UVB rays.

Stress and Acne

The stress and acne relationship is one that you need to pay attention to. Now validated by research, stress does play a larger part in acne breakouts. As much as ninety percent of dermatologists’ patients bemoan about the results that stress has on their skin. It does have a direct correlation, and it is seen as becoming a larger problem with each passing day, says Katie Rodan, MD, a clinical professor of dermatology at Stanford University.

How is it possible that acne would appear on your face from stress, emotional anxiety and a number of factors in your life? The connection is purely chemical. When you become tense, your adrenal glands flood your bloodstream with the hormone cortisol, which trigger the sweat glands in your face to produce more oil. When your sebaceous glands secrete excess sebum there is a higher probability that this excess oil will mix with dead skin cells and clog your pores, trapping bacteria inside. The result? More acne, primarily inflamed papules rather than blackheads or whiteheads.

So what actions can you take to mitigate the effect of stress on your acne? Of course, you can’t remove all the stressors from your life, that’s a part of being human. As we have seen, you can prevent its severity by leading a healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet and at least seven hours of sleep every night will help you build a strong foundation. If you’re well fed and well rested, you’re less likely to feel irritated by the events of your day. Another great and important thing is to get exercise everyday, even if it is just a short walk after lunch of in the evening. Lastly, it’s important to take time from each day to relax by reading a book, taking a bath, practicing yoga, or doing whatever makes you happy and calm.

It’s an important step towards overall good health, and therefore the health of your skin. Like anyone with acne you want to learn all you can to empower yourself and see an end to your acne so

Lifestyle

Is your lifestyle causing your acne? Certainly not. But the way you live affects your whole body, including its largest organ: the skin. The place you work, the hours you keep, the ways you play — all of these can take a toll on the epidermis, especially in those who are prone to acne. Following are a few everyday acne triggers you might not be aware of, and a few things you can do to avoid them.

Comedones on the job. Since some part of your skin is always in contact with your environment, it’s important to pay attention to the substances with which you come into contact on a regular basis. You may be exposing yourself to comedogenic (pore-clogging) substances on the job without even knowing it; while these substances are not the cause of your acne, they can aggravate it. For example: the airborne grease in a fast-food restaurant can create an invisible film on your skin, clogging your pores. Most industrial oils — the kinds used in cars, in factories, on bicycles — are comedogenic as well.

Acne & Sleep – Sleep and your skin. The simplest good deed you can do for your skin may surprise you: sleep! Scientists and mothers around the world agree that a good night’s sleep — at least eight hours — can do wonders for your complexion. How? A healthy, well-rested body has the resources to build a strong immune system. While a robust immune system won’t prevent acne altogether, it can help fight infection so your lesions clear up more quickly. Luckily, your body isn’t picky; uninterrupted sleep in the daytime is just as beneficial. So if you work late, sleep late — and try to maintain a regular schedule.

Acne & Sun – Savvy sun worshipping. While it’s true that small amounts of sun exposure may initially improve acne, don’t be fooled; the benefit is temporary. Consistent sun bathing will dry your skin, causing your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Also, skin that has been exposed to the sun has to slough old cells more frequently; when you combine the extra oil and extra dead cells, you create the ideal environment for comedones, or blocked pores. So if you work (or play) in the sun, it’s important to protect your skin with sunscreen. Look for oil-free products that provide at least an SPF 15 protection level from UVA and UVB rays.

Acne & Stress – The stress connection. Not surprisingly, stress often has a starring role in the ongoing acne drama. “Ninety percent of my patients complain about what stress does to their skin. It has a huge impact, and it’s becoming a bigger problem every day,” says Katie Rodan, MD, a clinical professor of dermatology at Stanford University.

How can stress — emotional anxiety caused by any number of factors in your life — show up on your face? The connection is purely chemical. When you become tense, your adrenal glands go work, flooding your bloodstream with the hormone cortisol. This triggers the sweat glands in your face to produce more oil. When your sebaceous glands go into high gear, there’s a higher probability that this excess oil will mix with dead skin cells and clog your pores, trapping bacteria inside. The result? More acne, primarily inflamed papules rather than blackheads or whiteheads.

What can you do? Of course, you can’t eliminate stress from your life — it’s part of being human. But you can minimize its damage by leading a healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet and at least seven hours of sleep every night will help you build a stronger physical foundation; if you’re well fed and well rested, you’re less likely to feel irritated by the events of your day. Try to get some exercise every day, even if it’s just a walk around the block at lunchtime. It’s also important to take time out of every day to relax — read a book, take a bath, practice yoga, or do whatever makes you feel happy and calm. It’s an important step towards overall good health, and therefore the health of your skin.

Diets

Don’t eat that — you’ll get zits! We’ve all heard it; from parents, friends or even the family doctor. But the fact is, even after extensive study, scientists have not found a connection between diet and acne. Not chocolate. Not french fries. Not pizza.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “A healthy diet is important for improving raw materials for healthy skin,” but they also note that greasy or sugary foods do not cause acne.1 Likewise, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association concurred, “Diet plays no role in acne treatment in most patients…even large amounts of certain foods have not clinically exacerbated acne.”1 Of course, that doesn’t mean you should make a habit of eating foods high in sugar or fat. The skin is the body’s largest organ, so what’s good for the rest of you will be good for your skin, too.

Acne Prevention & Diet – Nutrients for healthy skin. There are a number of nutrients found in everyday foods that are known to promote a healthy body — and therefore healthy skin. Get wise to these substances, and you’ll increase your chances of conquering your acne.

Acne Prevention & Diet – Vitamin A. Naturally occurring Vitamin A, or retinol, is found in fish oils, liver and dairy products. The Vitamin A produced by plants is known as Beta-carotene, and is found in yellow/orange fruits and vegetable such as carrots, yams, apricots and cantaloupe, as well as green vegetables like parsley, kale and spinach. Extremely high doses of Vitamin A are toxic, so don’t overdo it.

Acne Prevention & Diet – Vitamin B-2. Stress has been known to aggravate existing cases of acne, and Vitamin B-2 is often helpful alleviating stress. Foods with a high concentration of B-2 include whole grains, fish, milk, eggs, meat and leafy green vegetables.

Acne Prevention & Diet – Vitamin B-3. Found in peanuts, eggs, avocados, liver and lean meats, Vitamin B-3 improves circulation, promoting healthy skin. It also reduces the cholesterol level in the blood and helps you metabolize protein, sugar & fat — increasing your energy through proper utilization of food.

Acne Prevention & Diet – Vitamin E. Vitamin E is found in almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds, broccoli, wheat germ and vegetable oils. A powerful antioxidant, it protects your cells against the effects of free radicals, which are potentially damaging by-products of the body’s metabolism.

Acne Prevention & Diet – Zinc. Even in trace amounts, the antioxidant zinc is known to boost the immune system, improving overall health — which of course is reflected in the skin. Zinc can be found in eggs, whole grains, nuts and mushrooms.

Acne Prevention & Diet – Know your own triggers. Since acne is different for everyone, there may be certain foods that cause flare-ups in your skin. Clearly, these foods should be avoided. You may also want to check your vitamin supplements for their iodine content; while normal amounts of iodine have not been shown to affect skin, amounts greater than the RDA of 150 mcg may aggravate your acne.

Overall, use your common sense. Drink lots of water and eat a healthy, balanced diet — but don’t be afraid to indulge your cravings every now and then.

I’ve heard it said that if you believe you will succeed, or if you believe you will fail, you are right.  There is a lot of truth in that.  I have also heard it said, that as photographers, it is our responsibility to lead society.

As I write this we are in what is described as the worst recession since the great depression.  It feels as if all the news is doom and gloom.  I find myself being more careful in my spending, pulling back and even taking on a bit of a siege mentality.  Now the more we all do that, the worse our economy is going to get.  What can we, as stock photographers, do to help?  We can stay positive and we can make positive images.

The bright side

One way I am approaching my stock photography that allows me to create positive conceptual images and still feel like I am being fiscally responsible is to create images that cost little to nothing.

A great example of that is a picture I created just a couple of days ago.  The image illustrates the idea that no matter how dark things are, there is always a bright side.  That even when you are in a raging storm, on the other side of those clouds the sun is always shining.  The image shows a rainstorm of dark clouds, but above those storm clouds are light fluffy clouds and a shining sun.

Pictures of clouds, rain and sun

The storm clouds and rain were photographed on a road trip through Colorado.  The transition was created using clouds I shot on a vacation in Hawaii.  The light fluffy clouds were shot here in Marin County and the sun was added using the Lens Flare filter in Photoshop.

Shooting weather, pictures of clouds, rain, and sun are free.  Photographs of beautiful landscapes are also free.  I say pretty much because I have accumulated a lot of my weather and landscape files while on trips.  I am also fortunate to live in the Bay Area where we have an abundance of scenic vistas ranging from mountains to the ocean, to draw upon.

In another case, again drawing upon my archives of clouds, I used Photoshop to create a smiley face in the sky.  Total cost, a few hours of digital work.  It isn’t the best selling image I have ever made, but pretty much every penny it does earn is profit.  Some images I undertake require enormous expense, and I certainly do my share of them.  But it always feels good to create an image with a high probability of selling that costs little to nothing to make.

Creativity and a positive attitude

In my final example, I have an image of a man’s hand holding a light bulb in front of the sun.  I found a friend who modeled for me for no charge.  Again, a positive image, about solar power, conservation, and even creativity, at minimal to no cost.

Powerful conceptual ideas that cost little to nothing are all around us; Ideas that are needed in the market, and that we can feel good about on several levels.  I know that it helps me stay positive when I make images I am proud of, and it certainly helps my wallet when they sell.  As a business owner it also feels good to stretch my dollars.  As with so much else in life, all it requires from us is creativity and a positive attitude.

Running a marathon – lessons for leadership

I love to run. Most people looking at me think I love to eat and yes, it’s true. However, my physical size very much creates a false impression, as I would be twice my size if I did not run. In the last 10 years I have run 16 half marathons. But to the purpose of the story. After recently finishing two half marathons (last one 1.55 – not bad for a small, fat Irishman) I have come to the conclusion that there are 7 lessons that apply in my world of running that often apply to my world of work

Choosing For the Future of Stock Photography

Increasingly, at least as far as I can see, the micro sites are offering greater choices, and, at least in some cases, better choices as well. It seems logical…hundreds of thousands of shooters contributing photos to an agency as opposed to thousands.

Dealing with the New Reality for Stock Photographers

I did a search on Getty Images today while checking to see the competition that existed for an image idea I am considering creating. Then, just for the heck of it, I did the same search on iStockphoto. It was a bit of a revelation. Not only were there far more images, a couple of thousand rather than a couple of hundred, the iStockphoto images also included ones that were both higher in production value and more creative.

Ever wondered how to turn on the Northern Lights? This article aims to help you understand the processes that you will be witnessing on a Northern Lights tour, demystifying the science without spoiling the magic.

It can sometimes be said that “the atmosphere is electric,” and on Northern Lights tours this is especially true. The swirls of colour that appear in the night sky when the aurora borealis is in action are the result of electrical charges reacting with gases in the upper atmosphere. The currents of electricity involved are tens of thousands of times more powerful than the electricity you get from your mains sockets in your house. Thankfully, it all happens between 20 and 200 miles above your head.

The Colour of the Northern Lights

The colour of the aurora borealis depends upon how high up in the atmosphere the reactions take place. You can expect to see green shapes in the sky on Northern Lights tours, but other colours occur, too. If the event occurs lower down, such as a mere 60 miles up or less, and nitrogen is involved, then the aurora can appear blue. A nitrogen reaction higher up can result in a purple or violet light show. The more common green light shows involve oxygen up to a height of about 150 miles; if the reaction is even higher, then the lights may even appear red.

There is nothing unusual about oxygen and nitrogen: together they constitute the majority of the earth’s atmosphere, the same air you will be breathing while watching the sky during Northern Lights tours. But when charged particles collide with the earth’s upper atmosphere, these ordinary gases behave like a neon light. So where do these magically charged particles come from?

Solar Winds

The particles that are responsible for this dramatic light show originate in the sun. It’s an understatement to say that the sun generates a large amount of energy, and in the gigantic nuclear reactions that occur in the sun, fragments of atoms are spat out at millions of miles per hour. This flow of particles that travels from the sun out into the solar system is called a solar wind. When these winds hit the earth’s atmosphere where it is thinnest – around the North and South Poles – fireworks happen.

Because the size of the sun’s solar winds are not constant, neither are the auroras. Sunspots occur when the sun makes a sudden increase in its energy output, sending a flare out from its corona. Sunspots cause a peak in solar wind activity about every eleven years. Because of this, people taking Northern Lights tours during the years 2011 and 2012 can expect to see an even more spectacular show than usual.

If these winds, the gases and the electricity have confused you, I’m sure this will be explained to you again when you take your Northern Lights tour in Iceland. Whatever your understanding of the event, seeing the Northern Lights is certain to be a magical and memorable experience.
