Whenever a flood occurs, one of the first lines of defense is usually flood sandbags. Images of lines of people handing flood sandbags to each other are normally seen on television and in newspapers whenever floodwaters threaten a particular area. Sand is heavy and is able to withstand the pressure tons of water can put on them, so it makes them an effective choice to combat flood situations. They do tend to leak because rushing water can be an unstoppable force at times, so keeping a close eye on the situation is imperative.
Filling flood sandbags takes many volunteers as well. Tons of sand are sometimes needed to fill the bags and in flood prone areas, a system of sand-filling is usually already in place. It takes a lot of work to use the sandbags to protect a place against floods. Another use for the sandbags is for oil spills. Clean up efforts sometimes involve the use of flood sandbags in hopes of soaking up the oil before it reaches the shoreline. Agents such as Enviro-Bond 403™ can be added and then the oil can be encapsulated by changing it into a solid that is easy to clean up as well as recyclable. The oil then can used as a raw material for things like rubber, asphalt, plastics and fuel.
It can take about seven hours to place 1,500 flood sandbags along a shoreline and about 10 people to complete the job. While they have proven their effectiveness in oil spill cleanup efforts, the time and labor is takes to put them together can be taxing especially when there is a time factor. For instance, in the BP oil spill, the oil is already washing up on the beaches along the Gulf of Mexico and something is needed fast. One thing that is a little faster to assemble than flood sandbags is the HESCO® basket units. They can be put up within 20 minutes and you only need two people. Also, the Enviro-Armour™ can be added to the units and they act as a protective beach barrier that will stop the oil from ruining the beaches.
While flood sandbags are still a good weapon to have for floods, storms or oil spills, the HESCO® units might be something to consider since the oil is rapidly coming closer to shore. The catastrophic explosion that caused an gulf oil leak from a BP offshore drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico has reached the shoreline early Friday morning. The leak is currently releasing 5,000 barrels of oil per day, and efforts to manage the spill with controlled burning, dispersal and plugging the leak were unsuccessful Thursday. This oil spill is on track to become the worst oil spill in history, surpassing the damage done by the Exxon Valdez tanker that spilled 11 million gallons of oil into the ecologically sensitive Prince William Sound in 1989. Unlike the Exxon Valdez tragedy, in which a tanker held a finite capacity of oil, BP’s rig is tapped into an underwater oil well and could pump more oil into the ocean indefinitely until the leak is plugged.
Earlier this afternoon, the Coast Guard had predicted that oil could begin to hit the Louisiana coastline as early as tonight. At the time, the floating oil slick was just 3 miles from land and 25 miles from the nearest populated area.
The White House said 174,060 feet of flotation booms had been deployed to corral the floating oil. It said an additional 243,260 feet is available and 265,460 feet has been ordered.
It said 76 tugs, barges and skimmers were on scene to help in containment and cleanup, along with six fixed-wing aircraft, 11 helicopters, 10 remotely operated vehicles, and two mobile offshore drilling units.
